Halving

The scheduled cut to Bitcoin's block reward, roughly every four years.

Every 210,000 blocks the coins issued per block are halved, slowing new supply until issuance ends. It is written into the protocol rather than decided by anyone. Its market significance is argued endlessly; its supply effect is arithmetic.
