Glossary

Blockchain

A shared, append-only ledger maintained by many computers at once.

A blockchain is a database that many independent machines hold copies of, where new records are added in batches called blocks and each block references the one before it. Because changing an old record would break every reference after it, the history becomes progressively harder to alter. That property is what lets strangers agree on a set of balances without trusting a central operator.
