Sharks can detect an electric field as weak as 0.01 μv/m , the same as a human’s natural body electricity and they use this to locate prey from up to 30 feet away.

Sharks are able to sense potential prey by detecting their electrical signals which transfer through water via specialized receptors that line the sharks’ snout. When a small fish or crustacean swims over these sensitive organs, it triggers nerve impulses in the shark’s sensory cells and sends out information on size, shape, direction of travel and identity of what was sensed. This allows them to distinguish between different types of animals for hunting purposes – some sharks have learned how to identify living things using electro-reception.
